Activate Windows Server 2003 R2 Without Key
Jul 30, 2007 Re: Windows Server 2003 activation fails after P2V jbp00007 Jun 29, 2007 8:13 AM ( in response to helmut68 ) I went through this problem before but on activation window I called Microsoft hot line and after giving VOL it gives me new activation key and after that everything works fine.
1. Click on Start button.
2. Click on Run.
3. Type regedit into the Run text box and press Enter.
4. Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWPAEvents
5. Note: From this step onward, the cracking process must be performed as quickly as possible, as it hacks activation stuff and Windows may change back the setting if there is a delay of more than few seconds.
Locate a string value named OOBETimer.
6. Right-click on OOBETimer, and click on Modify.
7. Change the value to FF D5 71 D6 8B 6A 8D 6F D5 33 93 FD.
Activation OOBETimer
8. Click on OK.
9. Right-click on WPAEvents and select Permissions?.
10. Click on Advanced button.
11. Uncheck the check box for Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here.
12. Click on Apply.
13. When prompted, click COPY.
14. From there, highlight the SYSTEM line, and click Edit.
15. Choose the Deny option to ban all users from accessing and editing the key.
16. Click on OK.
17. Reboot the computer.
After the hack, Windows Home Server should run completely as a free copy, with users able to access Windows Update to get latest hotfixes and patches. The crack does not require BIOS mod.
To verify that the activation crack works after restarting the system, go to Start -> All Programs -> Activate Windows. The dialog should say Windows is already activated. Alternatively, go to Start -> Run and type oobe/msoobe /a.
Note: Some users reported that the method does not actually remove the activation grace period, even though it makes the system activated.
Windows Server 2003 has yet to be officially launched, but a registration key to install Microsoft Corp.'s new server operating system has already been posted online.
The volume license key allows installation of Windows Server 2003 on multiple systems without the activation process required for single licenses. Volume license keys are meant for corporate users. A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed that a volume license key had been leaked to the Internet and said the company is investigating the situation.
Microsoft is trying to determine whether the key was leaked from within Microsoft or by a customer of the company. 'We're still in the investigative stages,' the spokeswoman said.
Along with the key, several copies of Windows Server 2003 have been illegally posted on the Web for download. The software will be released on April 24.
It's not unusual for a registration key to be leaked online. Hundreds of Web sites offer registration keys, key generators and software cracks, which is software with copyright protections disabled, for just about any software application.
With the release of its Office XP and Windows XP products, Microsoft instituted a product-activation feature that was designed to thwart software piracy.
The Microsoft technology requires all users to 'activate' their copy of Windows XP soon after they purchase it. This process 'locks' a product identification number assigned to each copy of Windows XP to the PC it is installed on. Various information from the machine on which XP is installed is collected and used to generate a unique activation code based on the machine's configuration.

Because no activation is required for customers with a volume license key, however, Microsoft can't remotely disable the key, the spokeswoman said. She couldn't comment on whether there is a ceiling to the number of Windows Server 2003 copies that can be created with a volume license key.

However, the company can stop customers using the key from receiving future updates and service packs and exclude systems using the key from software updates, which are essential to keep the system secure, the spokeswoman said.

She declined to say whether the license key would be used to identify and block rogue Windows Server 2003 installations or whether some other method would be used.

Despite the existence of a free volume license key, comments posted in an online discussion forum on the Windows enthusiast site Neowin indicated that a lack of access to future software updates means that average users probably won't be interested in playing around with a server operating system.
